Serums 101

What is a serum?

A serum is a facial care product that contains concentrated amounts of active ingredients to renew, nourish, protect, and hydrate the skin. Although typically seen as  "extras" in your regimen, they have powerful properties that can target your unique concern.

When do you apply a serum?

A serum is typically the first product you apply to the skin after cleansing and toning because it has smaller molecules than a facial oil or moisturizer. You want serums to absorb first.

Why are they necessary?

Serums contain active ingredients that target specific skin concerns; wrinkles, pigmentation, blemishes, and thinning skin. As cell turnover and skin detoxification slow down with age, using active or superfood ingredients found in a serum will gradually transform your skin with each turnover cycle.

How do I choose?

Choose a serum based on your concern. For example, if you have acne, you will want to look for a water-based serum or something that helps the cell turnover process. If you have pigment or wrinkles, look for serums containing exfoliating ingredients along with vitamin C, niacinamide, or peptides. Dry or aging skin will benefit from botanical based antioxidants and a creamier textured serum for extra moisture.
