How To Add Facial Oils To Your Skincare Routine

If you're scared of using oil on your face, please read this......

Oils are necessary for healthy skin because our skin naturally produces and relies on lipid molecules to maintain barrier protection, hydration, softness, and resilience.

A skincare routine that lacks quality oils can leave the skin vulnerable to dehydration, irritation, inflammation, and premature aging.

Signs that your skin needs oil:

• Dry, flaky skin

• Dehydration lines around the eyes or mouth

• Rough patches or "sandpaper" skin

• Angry, red breakouts (yes, oil may be the solution)

• Stinging sensation when you apply your skincare products

• Tight, restricted feeling when smiling or being expressive

Since I've always had oily, acne-prone skin, I used to be so afraid of using oil. Once I got over that fear and incorporated oils into my regimen, my skin texture, hydration levels, and acne all improved... almost overnight.

Oils help:

• Seal in hydration

• Regulate sebum production

• Support elasticity

• Calm inflammation

• Improve the overall texture and glow of the complexion

Whether your skin is dry or you're constantly battling acne, oils are for everyone. It can take a few weeks for the skin to adjust, so start slowly with just 1 to 2 drops and build from there. When formulated properly, facial oils do not suffocate the skin; they help strengthen and support it.

Most of the time, I layer oils into my routine; they come after serum, before moisturizer. But if you're new to oils, below are some easy ways to incorporate them into your daily routine without freaking your skin out.

There are many ways to use an oil in your regimen - you don't have to do them all, you just have to choose one.

OPTION 1: BLEND SERUM + OIL

Makes a lightweight daytime moisturizer

Best for:

• Oily skin
• Warmer weather
• Base moisture under makeup

How to:

• 2 pumps of Vitamin Sea Serum (or Nori Gel Serum) and 2-3 drops of any Omega Oil

This creates a lightweight feel on the skin without it feeling overwhelmed or greasy. The serum will take care of hydration and traveling down to the deeper layers, and the oil will sit on the surface to keep the barrier balanced and prevent water loss.

OPTION 2: BLEND OIL + A RICH MOISTURIZER

For a dewy, rich moisture bomb for the skin

Best for:

• Dry skin

• Nighttime rituals

• Base makeup for dry skin

• If you are seeing signs of aging on neck + chest

How to:

A dime-sized amount of Plankton Peptide Cream and 2-3 drops of any Omega Oil. Blend together in finger tips and apply generously to face, neck, and chest.

This keeps your moisturizer a little more "wet," which can improve the effects of the cream, while promoting a glowing, healthy complexion.

OPTION 3: USE A CLEANSING OIL, THEN REMOVE IT FROM THE SKIN

This is where I would start if you're new to using oil

Best for:

• Dehydrated or dry skin

• Oily or acne-prone skin

• Anyone who wants the benefits of oil but doesn't want to wear it all day

How to:

With dry hands and a dry face, massage 2-3 pumps of oil onto the skin for a few minutes. Wet your hands with warm water and massage again for another minute. Then wipe the face clean with a warm, damp washcloth. Follow with your regular cleanser.

Oil Cleansing Routine

This one will take you by surprise...and it's one of my biggest secrets to having glowing skin in my 40's. If you're not sure about wearing oil all day, do this method instead - your skin will still get the benefits of oil, but you don't have to wear it all day or night.
